Movie Review: Something Borrowed (2011) PG-13

Darcy (Kate Husdon) plays center stage in a which portrays friendship, love and infidelity. Darcy has been best friends with Rachel (Gennifer Goodwin) since they were kids, but Rachel is green with envy when she can't be in the spotlight. When Darcy gets drunk at Rachel's 30th birthday party, it shows the audience Darcy's true character in the film. Her overpowering and manipulative attitude to control Dex continues to make Rachel's skin crawl.

In law school, Rachel has feelings for Dex, but her passive attitude is too slow for Darcy. She has already snatched Dex and asked him out in front of her, which leads to tension throughout the film. Each time Dex and Darcy start to express their love, Rachel becomes irritated, thinking back to a snap decision that could have gone different.

The Hamptons are a central location in the film which bring these friends together each weekend. This is where have great conversations, enjoy the beach, and Rachel becomes jealous of her rival. Rachel and Dex, long-time law school cohorts, are searching for the compassion and love of the other in the film. The common denominator, Darcy, is Rachel's biggest frustration. In Rachel's eyes, Darcy is all wrong for Dex. This may be why Rachel allows herself to become flirtatious when she believes Dex deserves better.

The sexual attraction between Dex and Rachel seems weak in some places of the film. This may be because Hudson's character is so strong and a party girl. While Rachel knows what she wants and sets out to get it, I felt the strength in her fight was weak. She doesn't take Dex until near the wedding day, and she could have had him much sooner.

Goodwin's role in the film is to please others and to back down when she doesn't get what she wants. When it comes to Darcy, however, Goodwin allows frustration to build up until she takes what she wants--Dex. And Dex wants her, which drives Darcy to be dramatic.

In the end, it comes down to Dex. He stands with two women pulling him different directions, but only women who he truly loves. The physical chemistry between Goodwin and Egglesfield seemed to lack strength in some scenes, and their sex appeal could have been stronger. The sex appeal between Hudson and Egglesfield was magical to watch throughout the movie, but still, it was predictable.Love stories in Hollywood always seem to end the same way.
